Week 20: Solar Ovens
More and more, we are finding it necessary to become less reliant on fossil fuels. As our climate changes, the need for renewable engird sources becomes more and more clear. Luckily, we have a major energy source just a couple million miles away, the sun! The sun provides visible light, ultraviolet light, infrared, radio waves, X-rays, and gamma rays. Radiation is one way to transfer heat. So, today we will explore how we can capture the suns incredible heating powers with a home made solar oven.
We will start with making this dish. The dish shape helps focus lots of light to one point. To do this, find one of the wood triangle templates in the shop (there are on the laser cutter) and trace out 16 onto cardboard. After cutting out the shapers, tape them together. After that glue on aluminum foil to cote the inside of the dish.
Next you will make the stand. The stand should both hold your container over you dish as well as take as little shadow as possible. Good luck!
